    Baala Kaanda - Sarga 15
In this Sarga, the Dēvas along with Gandharvas, Siddhas, Yakshas and Ṛshis pray to Lord Vishṇu and ask him to be born in a human form to kill Rāvaṇa, who is tormenting all the worlds.

This Sarga is special, because it happens completely in Dēva Lōka and also because it is in this Sarga that Lord Vishṇu appears for the first time in the narrative.
    1.15.1
mēdhāvī tu tatō dhyātvā sa kiñcididamuttaram ।
    labdhasañjñastatastaṃ tu vēdajñō nṛpamabavrīt ॥
Having remained plunged in thought for a while,
that eminent scholar of Vēdas (Ṛṡyaṡṛṅga),
came to a decision as to what should
be done next, and said to the king:

    1.15.2
iṣṭiṃ tē'haṃ kariṣyāmi putrīyāṃ putrakāraṇāt ।
    atharvaṡirasi prōktairmantraiḥ siddhāṃ vidhānataḥ ॥
There is a Yajña for getting offspring mentioned
along with the Mantras in Atharva Ṡirasi.
I will perform that Yajña for you as per the Ṡāstras
so that you would beget offspring.
Atharva Ṡirasi is a part of Veda.
    1.15.3
    tataḥ prārabdhavāniṣṭiṃ putrīyāṃ putrakāraṇāt ।
juhāva cāgnau tējasvī mantradṛṣṭēna karmaṇā ॥
And that man of splendor commenced the Yajña
for the obtaining offspring, and made
oblations into the fire according to
    rites prescribed in the Mantras.
    1.15.4
tatō dēvāḥ sagandharvāḥ siddhāṡca paramarṣayaḥ ।
    bhāgapratigrahārthaṃ vai samavētā yathāvidhi ॥
Then, all the Dēvas, Gandharvas, Siddhas and great Ṛshis
gathered to receive the offerings from the Yajña
that was meant for each of them.
    1.15.5
tāḥ samētya yathānyāyaṃ tasmin sadasi dēvatāḥ ।
abruvan lōkakarttāraṃ brahmāṇaṃ vacanaṃ mahat ॥
After thus assembling as per custom,
the Dēvas said the following words of monumental significance
to Lord Brahma, creator of the worlds:
    1.15.6
bhagavan tvatprasādēna rāvaṇō nāma rākṣasaḥ ।
sarvānnō bādhatē vīryācchāsituṃ taṃ na ṡaknumaḥ ॥
O Bhagawan, the Rākshasa named Rāvaṇa harries us
with the enormous strength he gained by pleasing you
and we are not able to contain him.
    1.15.7
tvayā tasmai varō dattaḥ prītēna bhagavan purā ।
mānayantaṡca taṃ nityaṃ sarvaṃ tasya kṣamāmahē ॥
We are condoning all his excesses all the time
being respectful of the boons given by you to him earlier.
    1.15.8
    udvējayati lōkāṃstrīnucchritān dvēṣṭi durmatiḥ ।
    ṡakraṃ tridaṡarājānaṃ pradharṣayitumicchati ॥
That wicked Rāvaṇa is terrorizing all the three worlds.
He resents every other person who is powerful.
His eye is now on assailing Ṡakra, the god of Dēvas.
Ṡakra is another name for Indra.
    1.15.9
    ṛṣīn yakṣān sagandharvānasurān brāhmaṇāṃstathā ।
    atikrāmati durdhaṣō varadānēna mōhitaḥ ॥
Because of the boons given to him,
he has become unassailable and arrogant.
    He is abusing Ṛshis, Yakshas,
    Gandharvas, Brāhmaṇas and Asuras.
    1.15.10
nainaṃ sūryaḥ pratapati pārṡvē vāti na mārutaḥ ।
calōrmimālī taṃ dṛṣṭvā samudrō'pi na kampatē ॥
Neither is the sun able to scorch him
nor is Wind able to get past him.
Even the restless, billow-wreathed sea is
frozen into stillness when it sees him.
    1.15.11
    tanmahannō bhayaṃ tasmādrākṣasādghōradarṡanāt ।
    vadhārthaṃ tasya bhagavannupāyaṃ karttumarhasi ॥
We are scared by the very sight of him.
O Bhagawan, please find a way to put an end to him.
    1.15.12
    ēvamuktaḥ suraiḥ sarvaiṡcintayitvā tatō'bravīt ।
    hantā'yaṃ viditastasya vadhōpāyō durātmanaḥ ॥
Having heard all of them, Lord Brahma contemplated about it
and said: "Yes, indeed, there is a way to annihilate him!"
    1.15.13
    tēna gandharvayakṣāṇāṃ dēvadānavarakṣasām ।
avadhyō'smīti vāguktā tathētyuktaṃ ca tanmayā ॥
He asked for immunity from being killed by
Dēvas, Daanavas, Rākshasas, Gandharvas and Yakshas.
    And I said Yes.
    1.15.14
    nākīrtayadavajñānāttadrakṣō mānuṣāṃstadā ।
    tasmātsa mānuṣādvadhyō mṛtyurnānyō'sya vidyatē ॥
He did not include humans in that list as
he was very dismissive of them.
Hence he can be killed only by a human and no one else.
    1.15.15
ētacchrutvā priyaṃ vākyaṃ brahmaṇā samudāhṛtam ।
    sarvē maharṣayō dēvāḥ prahṛṣṭāstē'bhavaṃstadā ॥
Hearing those words of relief from Lord Brahma,
all the Dēvas and Ṛshis felt very happy.
    1.15.16
    ētasminnantarē viṣṇurupayātō mahādyutiḥ ।
    ṡaṅkhacakragadāpāṇiḥ pītavāsā jagatpatiḥ ॥
Meanwhile, the Lord of the Universe,
    the infinitely radiant Vishṇu
appeared there in his yellow robes with
Ṡankha, Chakra and Gada in his hands.
Ṡankha is conch. Chakra is discus. Gada is club.

Consider today, i.e., the day you are reading this Ṡlōka, as the day that Lord Vishṇu came into your life to help you. He will take care of the Rākshasas, i.e., the adversities, in your life. He will do everything for you even if it means having to take birth as a human or having his kingdom taken away or having his wife abducted, or whatever.

Memorize this Ṡlōka and if you have young children, help them memorize it.

    1.15.17
brahmaṇā ca samāgamya tatra tasthau samāhitaḥ ।
tamabruvan surāḥ sarvē samabhiṣṭūya sannatāḥ ॥
He went up to Brahma and took a
seat there in a solemn manner.
All the Dēvas bowed to him and praised him.
    They said to him:
    1.15.18-20a

tvāṃ niyōkṣyāmahē viṣṇō lōkānāṃ hitakāmyayā ।
    rājñō daṡarathasya tvamayōdhyādhipatērvibhōḥ ॥
    dharmajñasya vadānyasya maharṣisamatējasaḥ ।
tasya bhāryāsu tisṛṣu hrīṡrīkīrtyupamāsu ca ॥
    viṣṇō putratvamāgaccha kṛtvātmānaṃ caturvidham ।
O Vishṇu! For the sake of helping the worlds,
we would like you to take the form of four sons
to the three wives of King Daṡaratha.
They are comparable to Hree, Sree and Keerti.
    Daṡaratha, the king of Ayōdhyā
is generous, and savant of Dharma and
shines with the brilliance of great Ṛshis.
Hree, Sree, Keerti are the names of the three daughters of Daksha.
    Hree means modesty and humility.
    Sree means affluence and endowment.
    Keerti means fame and reputation.
    1.15.20
tatra tvaṃ mānuṣō bhūtvā pravṛddhaṃ lōkakaṇṭakam ।
avadhyaṃ daivatairviṣṇō samarē jahi rāvaṇam ॥
    Then, in that human form,
take up a battle with Rāvaṇa and kill him,
for he has immunity from being killed by us, the Dēvas.
He is troubling all the worlds and
his power is growing day by day.
    1.15.21

sa hi dēvān sagandharvān siddhāṃṡca ṛṣisattamān ।
rākṣasō rāvaṇō mūrkhō vīryōtsēkēna bādhatē ॥
That insolent Rākshasa, Rāvaṇa of unbridled strength
    is terrorizing Dēvas, Rākshasas,
    Gandharvas, Siddhas and exalted Munis.
    1.15.22

    ṛṣayastu tatastēna gandharvāpsarasastathā ।

    That wretched soul is tormenting
    Ṛshis, Gandharvas and even Apsaras
that play in the gardens of heaven.
    Apsaras are magical celestial damsels.
    1.15.23

vadhārthaṃ vayamāyātāstasya vai munibhiḥ saha ।
    siddhagandharvayakṣāṡca tatastvāṃ ṡaraṇaṃ gatāḥ ॥
Hence all of us, including Munis, Siddhas,
Gandharvas and Yakshas urge you to kill him.
We repose our confidence in you.
    1.15.24

O Dēva, Tormentor of the insidious!
You are the ultimate resort for all of us.
Please take birth as a human and
eliminate the enemies of the Dēvas.
    1.15.25-26

Having heard them, Vishṇu, the lord of Dēvas,
the best among the Dēvas and the one
venerated by the beings of all the worlds,
    addressed Brahma and everyone else
who had assembled there with a legitimate reason.

"Bid farewell to your fears! Everything will bode well for you!
For your sake, I will kill Rāvaṇa in a battle
and his sons, grandsons, ministers, kith and kin
who are causing fear among the Dēvas and Ṛshis
with their cruel behavior and evil-minds.
I will reign in the world of humans for
eleven thousand years ruling the entire earth."

    Having promised them thus, Vishṇu,
the Dēva of Dēvas, fully aware of himself,
thought about the appropriate place for him
    to take birth on earth.

wide and pleasant like lotus petals
made himself into four parts and
selected king Daṡaratha to be his mortal parent.
