    Read Ramayana Baala Kaanda - Sarga 30

    In this Sarga, with the protection provided by Rāma, Viṡwāmitra successfully completes his Yajña. Rāma hurls away Māreecha into the ocean and kills all the other Rākshasas that are fouling the Yajñas. This is Rāma's first success in restoring the order that was disturbed by Rāvaṇa and his goons.
    1.30.1
    அத தௌ தேஸகாலஜ்ஞௌ ராஜபுத்ராவரிந்தமௌ ।
    தேஸே காலே ச வாக்யஜ்ஞாவப்ரூதாம் கௌஸிகம் வச: ॥
    atha tau dēṡakālajñau rājaputrāvarindamau ।
    dēṡē kālē ca vākyajñāvabrūtāṃ kauṡikaṃ vacaḥ ॥
    Then, the duo of princes, the subjugators of detractors,
    who knew what to say when and where,
    asked that descendant of Kuṡika:

    1.30.2
    பகவந் ஸ்ரோதுமிச்சாவோ யஸ்மிந் காலே நிஸாசரௌ ।
    ஸம்ரக்ஷணீயௌ தௌ ப்ரஹ்மந்நாதிவர்தேத தத்க்ஷணம் ॥
    bhagavan ṡrōtumicchāvō yasmin kālē niṡācarau ।
    saṃrakṣaṇīyau tau brahmannātivartēta tatkṣaṇam ॥
    O Bhagawan! We would like to know
    when the protection from Rākshasas is needed.
    We want to be conscious of the timing.
    1.30.3
    ஏவம் ப்ருவாணௌ காகுத்ஸ்தௌ த்வரமாணௌ யுயுத்ஸயா ।
    ஸர்வே தே முநய: ப்ரீதா: ப்ரஸஸம்ஸுர்ந்ருபாத்மஜௌ ॥
    ēvaṃ bruvāṇau kākutsthau tvaramāṇau yuyutsayā ।
    sarvē tē munayaḥ prītāḥ praṡaṡaṃsurnṛpātmajau ॥
    The Munis felt very happy hearing
    the words of the princes of Kākutstha lineage
    displaying their eagerness to fight,
    and applauded them and said:
    1.30.4
    அத்யப்ரப்ருதி ஷட்ராத்ரம் ரக்ஷதம் ராகவௌ யுவாம் ।
    தீக்ஷாம் கதோ ஹ்யேஷ முநிர்மௌநித்வம் ச கமிஷ்யதி ॥
    adyaprabhṛti ṣaḍrātraṃ rakṣataṃ rāghavau yuvām ।
    dīkṣāṃ gatō hyēṣa munirmaunitvaṃ ca gamiṣyati ॥
    O princes of Raghu dynasty!
    Starting from now, we need your protection for six nights.
    The Muni (Viṡwāmitra) is in Deeksha.
    He will be silent and will not speak with anyone.
    1.30.5
    தௌ ச தத்வசநம் ஸ்ருத்வா ராஜபுத்ரௌ யஸஸ்விநௌ ।
    அநித்ரௌ ஷடஹோராத்ரம் தபோவநமரக்ஷதாம் ॥
    tau ca tadvacanaṃ ṡrutvā rājaputrau yaṡasvinau ।
    anidrau ṣaḍahōrātraṃ tapōvanamarakṣatām ॥
    The duo of those renowned princes,
    followed that request and protected the Yajña
    for six days and nights, without sleeping.
    1.30.6
    உபாஸாஞ்சக்ரதுர்வீரௌ யத்தௌ பரமதந்விநௌ ।
    ரரக்ஷதுர்முநிவரம் விஸ்வாமித்ரமரிந்தமௌ ॥
    upāsāñcakraturvīrau yattau paramadhanvinau ।
    rarakṣaturmunivaraṃ viṡvāmitramarindamau ॥
    Bearing the ultimate of bows,
    those two Veeras, subjugators of enemies,
    stayed nearby in full alert and
    protected the eminent Muni, Viṡwāmitra.
    1.30.7
    அத காலே கதே தஸ்மிந் ஷஷ்டேऽஹநி ஸமாகதே ।
    ஸௌமித்ரிமப்ரவீத்ராமோ யத்தோ பவ ஸமாஹித: ॥
    atha kālē gatē tasmin ṣaṣṭhē'hani samāgatē ।
    saumitrimabravīdrāmō yattō bhava samāhitaḥ ॥
    As time passed, and as the sixth day approached
    Rāma said to Lakshmaṇa: "Be on high alert and ready!"

    This is just how warriors and even players of a sport encourage each other on the field. The equivalent modern expression would be "Be ready, buddy!"
    1.30.8
    ராமஸ்யைவம் ப்ருவாணஸ்ய த்வரிதஸ்ய யுயுத்ஸயா ।
    ப்ரஜஜ்வால ததோ வேதிஸ்ஸோபாத்யாயபுரோஹிதா ॥
    rāmasyaivaṃ bruvāṇasya tvaritasya yuyutsayā ।
    prajajvāla tatō vēdissōpādhyāyapurōhitā ॥
    Rāma, saying thus, became ready for an imminent fight.
    And at the same time the altar with
    Priests and Purōhita glowed brilliantly with fire.

    Vālmeeki would have been an excellent screenplay writer' and cinematographer, had he lived today.

    Read these three Ṡlōkas carefully.

    In the first one, you can see the camera moving slowly from the ferocious face of Rāma to the bright and red fire on the altar.

    In the second Ṡlōka the camera zooms out to include nearby objects like Darbha and the ladles and then finally to include Viṡwāmitra.

    In the third Ṡlōka, the camera follows the fire upwards into the sky, from where the sound is heard.

    This moment of raising fire on the altar is very significant. It represents the grand finale of everything that went thus far in the story of Rāmāyaṇa. The Avatāra of Rāma is to restore those sacred fires of Yajñas that are symbolic of the connection between Humans and Gods.
    1.30.9
    ஸதர்பசமஸஸ்ருக்கா ஸஸமித்குஸுமோச்சயா ।
    விஸ்வாமித்ரேண ஸஹிதா வேதிர்ஜஜ்வால ஸர்த்விஜா ॥
    sadarbhacamasasrukkā sasamitkusumōccayā ।
    viṡvāmitrēṇa sahitā vēdirjajvāla sartvijā ॥
    The altar glowed in that fire with all the Darbhas,
    Chamasas, Srukkus around it, decorated with
    Samidhas and arrangements of flowers
    and with the radiant Viṡwāmitra.
    Darbha is a type of grass used in Vedic ceremonies.
    Chamasas are bowls. Srukkus are ladles.
    Samidhas are pieces of firewood used in Yajñas.
    1.30.10
    மந்த்ரவச்ச யதாந்யாயம் யஜ்ஞோऽஸௌ ஸம்ப்ரவர்ததே ।
    ஆகாஸே ச மஹாந் ஸப்த: ப்ராதுராஸீத்பயாநக: ॥
    mantravacca yathānyāyaṃ yajñō'sau sampravartatē ।
    ākāṡē ca mahān ṡabdaḥ prādurāsīdbhayānakaḥ ॥
    As the Yajña proceeded with
    all the Mantras as it should,
    a sudden, loud, thunderous and frightening sound
    was heard above in the sky.
    1.30.11
    ஆவார்ய ககநம் மேகோ யதா ப்ராவ்ருஷி நிர்கத: ।
    ததா மாயாம் விகுர்வாணௌ ராக்ஷஸாவப்யதாவதாம் ॥
    āvārya gaganaṃ mēghō yathā prāvṛṣi nirgataḥ ।
    tathā māyāṃ vikurvāṇau rākṣasāvabhyadhāvatām ॥
    Two Rākshasas appeared swiftly covering the sky
    like dark clouds in the monsoon months.
    1.30.12
    மாரீசஸ்ச ஸுபாஹுஸ்ச தயோரநுசராஸ்ச யே ।
    ஆகம்ய பீமஸங்காஸா ருதிரௌகமவாஸ்ருஜந் ॥
    mārīcaṡca subāhuṡca tayōranucarāṡca yē ।
    āgamya bhīmasaṅkāṡā rudhiraughamavāsṛjan ॥
    The fearsome Māreeca and Subāhu,
    along with their henchmen came out
    and created a downpour of blood.
    1.30.13
    ஸா தேந ருதிரௌகேண வேதிர்ஜஜ்வால மண்டிதா ।
    ஸஹஸாऽபித்ருதோ ராமஸ்தாநபஸ்யத்ததோ திவி ॥
    sā tēna rudhiraughēṇa vēdirjajvāla maṇḍitā ।
    sahasā'bhidrutō rāmastānapaṡyattatō divi ॥
    The tongues of fire from the altar
    rose with the shower of blood.
    Rāma rushed there and saw them in the sky.
    1.30.14
    தாவாபதந்தௌ ஸஹஸா த்ருஷ்ட்வா ராஜீவலோசந: ।
    லக்ஷ்மணம் த்வபிஸம்ப்ரேக்ஷ்ய ராமோ வசநமப்ரவீத் ॥
    tāvāpatantau sahasā dṛṣṭvā rājīvalōcanaḥ ।
    lakṣmaṇaṃ tvabhisamprēkṣya rāmō vacanamabravīt ॥
    The wide, lotus eyed Rāma, saw them
    coming down fast and said to Lakshmaṇa:
    1.30.15
    பஸ்ய லக்ஷ்மண துர்வ்ருத்தாந் ராக்ஷஸாந் பிஸிதாஸநாந் ।
    மாநவாஸ்த்ரஸமாதூதாநநிலேந யதா கநாந் ॥
    paṡya lakṣmaṇa durvṛttān rākṣasān piṡitāṡanān ।
    mānavāstrasamādhūtānanilēna yathā ghanān ॥
    I am going to drive these ill-behaving, man-eating
    Rākshasas away just as a wild breeze drives away the clouds,
    with this Mānavāstra.
    1.30.16
    மாநவம் பரமோதாரமஸ்த்ரம் பரமபாஸ்வரம் ।
    சிக்ஷேப பரமக்ருத்தோ மாரீசோரஸி ராகவ: ॥
    mānavaṃ paramōdāramastraṃ paramabhāsvaram ।
    cikṣēpa paramakruddhō mārīcōrasi rāghavaḥ ॥
    The prince of Raghu dynasty, then,
    hurled the bright, glowing and powerful Mānavāstra,
    aimed at the chest of Māreeca.
    1.30.17
    ஸ தேந பரமாஸ்த்ரேண மாநவேந ஸமாஹத: ।
    ஸம்பூர்ணம் யோஜநஸதம் க்ஷிப்த: ஸாகரஸம்ப்லவே ॥
    sa tēna paramāstrēṇa mānavēna samāhataḥ ।
    sampūrṇaṃ yōjanaṡataṃ kṣiptaḥ sāgarasamplavē ॥
    That extremely powerful Mānavāstra
    struck him so hard that he was thrown
    away at a distance of a hundred Yōjanas,
    into the surging high seas.
    1.30.18
    விசேதநம் விகூர்ணந்தம் ஸீதேஷு பலதாடிதம் ।
    நிரஸ்தம் த்ருஸ்ய மாரீசம் ராமோ லக்ஷ்மணமப்ரவீத் ॥
    vicētanaṃ vighūrṇantaṃ ṡītēṣu balatāḍitam ।
    nirastaṃ dṛṡya mārīcaṃ rāmō lakṣmaṇamabravīt ॥
    Seeing Māreeca, who had become
    unconscious, thrown away reeling at a distance,
    by that cold Astra, Rāma said to Lakshmaṇa:
    'Cold Astra' denotes an Astra that does not create fire.
    1.30.19
    பஸ்ய லக்ஷ்மண ஸீதேஷும் மாநவம் தர்மஸம்ஹிதம் ।
    மோஹயித்வா நயத்யேநம் ந ச ப்ராணைர்வ்யயுஜ்யத ॥
    paṡya lakṣmaṇa ṡītēṣuṃ mānavaṃ dharmasaṃhitam ।
    mōhayitvā nayatyēnaṃ na ca prāṇairvyayujyata ॥
    Look, this cold Astra, the Mānavāstra,
    which has a rightful behavior
    made him only unconscious and threw him away,
    but did not take his life.
    1.30.20
    இமாநபி வதிஷ்யாமி நிர்க்ருணாந் துஷ்டசாரிண: ।
    ராக்ஷஸாந் பாபகர்மஸ்தாந் யஜ்ஞக்நாந் ருதிராஸநாந் ॥
    imānapi vadhiṣyāmi nirghṛṇān duṣṭacāriṇaḥ ।
    rākṣasān pāpakarmasthān yajñaghnān rudhirāṡanān ॥
    I will now kill the rest of these ill-behaved, cruel-hearted,
    blood-thirsty, Yajña-blocking Rākshasas!

    A real Veera will not get carried away with his success, and would not continue the killing spree indiscriminately.

    He would be clear in his mind about who and why he has to kill. Rāma is very conscious of why he has to kill these Rākshasas, or, in other words, why they deserve to be killed.
    1.30.21
    ஸங்க்ருஹ்யாஸ்த்ரம் ததோ ராமோ திவ்யமாக்நேயமத்புதம் ।
    ஸுபாஹூரஸி சிக்ஷேப ஸ வித்த: ப்ராபதத்புவி ॥
    saṅgṛhyāstraṃ tatō rāmō divyamāgnēyamadbhutam ।
    subāhūrasi cikṣēpa sa viddhaḥ prāpatadbhuvi ॥
    Then Rāma reached to the divine, mesmerizing Agnēyāstra
    and hurled it at the chest of Subāhu,
    making him fall down dead.
    1.30.22
    ஸேஷாந் வாயவ்யமாதாய நிஜகாந மஹாயஸா: ।
    ராகவ: பரமோதாரோ முநீநாம் முதமாவஹந் ॥
    ṡēṣān vāyavyamādāya nijaghāna mahāyaṡāḥ ।
    rāghavaḥ paramōdārō munīnāṃ mudamāvahan ॥
    Then, that highly admired and magnanimous
    prince of Raghu dynasty killed the
    rest of the Rākshasas with Vāyavyāstra
    making the Munis extremely happy.
    1.30.23
    ஸ ஹத்வா ராக்ஷஸாந் ஸர்வாந் யஜ்ஞக்நாந் ரகுநந்தந: ।
    ருஷிபி: பூஜிதஸ்தத்ர யதேந்த்ரோ விஜயே புரா ॥
    sa hatvā rākṣasān sarvān yajñaghnān raghunandanaḥ ।
    ṛṣibhiḥ pūjitastatra yathēndrō vijayē purā ॥
    The prince of Raghu dynasty was
    then hailed and revered by all the Munis,
    just as Indra was, upon his own success, in the past.
    1.30.24
    அத யஜ்ஞே ஸமாப்தே து விஸ்வாமித்ரோ மஹாமுநி: ।
    நிரீதிகா திஸோ த்ருஷ்ட்வா காகுத்ஸ்தமிதமப்ரவீத் ॥
    atha yajñē samāptē tu viṡvāmitrō mahāmuniḥ ।
    nirītikā diṡō dṛṣṭvā kākutsthamidamabravīt ॥
    Contented as the Yajña was completed successfully,
    and seeing the world relieved in every direction,
    the great Muni Viṡwāmitra said to
    the prince of Kākutstha lineage :
    1.30.25
    க்ருதார்தோऽஸ்மி மஹாபாஹோ க்ருதம் குருவசஸ்த்வயா ।
    ஸித்தாஸ்ரமமிதம் ஸத்யம் க்ருதம் ராம மஹாயஸ: ॥
    kṛtārthō'smi mahābāhō kṛtaṃ guruvacastvayā ।
    siddhāṡramamidaṃ satyaṃ kṛtaṃ rāma mahāyaṡaḥ ॥
    O mighty armed and well renowned Rāma!
    You, indeed, fulfilled the promise of your father.
    My purpose is served and this
    Siddhāṡrama stands here true to its name!

    This Ṡlōka is a simple summary and essence of all that happened.

    The skill of summing up a momentous and arduous endeavor in clear and simple words, is something that comes naturally to the gifted and through effort, to others.

    Also, notice the humility of Viṡwāmitra in giving the entire credit to Daṡaratha, Rāma and to Siddhāṡrama.




    இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
    ஸ்ரீமத்பாலகாண்டே த்ரிம்ஸ: ஸர்க: ॥
    ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
    ṡrīmadbālakāṇḍē triṃṡaḥ sargaḥ ॥
    Thus concludes the thirtieth Sarga
    in Bāla Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
    the first ever poem of humankind,
    composed by Vālmeeki.

    We completed reading 971 Ṡlōkas out of ~24,000 Ṡlōkas of Vālmeeki Rāmāyaṇa.
