Baala Kaanda - Sarga 55
The fight that erupted between Viṡwāmitra's army and the forces created by Ṡabala in the previous Sarga concludes in this Sarga when the army of Viṡwāmitra gets completely eradicated. Viṡwāmitra goes off to the Himalayas, does Tapa, pleases Ṡiva who grants all the Astras in the world to him. He then goes back to Vasishṭha’s Āṡrama and destroys it. Vasishṭha gets outraged and lifts his Daṇḍa.
1.55.1
ததஸ்தாநாகுலாந் த்ருஷ்ட்வா விஸ்வாமித்ராஸ்த்ரமோஹிதாந் ।
வஸிஷ்டஸ்சோதயாமாஸ காமதுக்ஸ்ருஜ யோகத: ॥
tatastānākulān dṛṣṭvā viṡvāmitrāstramōhitān ।
vasiṣṭhaṡcōdayāmāsa kāmadhuksṛja yōgataḥ ॥
Seeing those forces thus disturbed and confused
by the Astras of Viṡwāmitra, Vasishṭha
exhorted the wish fulfilling cow to
create more forces using Yogic powers.
1.55.2-3
தஸ்யா ஹும்பாரவாஜ்ஜாதா: காம்போஜா ரவிஸந்நிபா: ।
ஊதஸஸ்த்வத ஸஞ்ஜாதா: பப்லவா: ஸஸ்த்ரபாணய: ॥
யோநிதேஸாச்ச யவநா: ஸக்ருத்தேஸாச்சகாஸ்ததா ।
ரோமகூபேஷு ச ம்லேச்சா ஹாரீதாஸ்ஸகிராதகா: ॥
tasyā humbhāravājjātāḥ kāmbhōjā ravisannibhāḥ ।
ūdhasastvatha sańjātāḥ paplavāḥ ṡastrapāṇayaḥ ॥
yōnidēṡācca yavanāḥ ṡakṛddēṡācchakāstathā ।
rōmakūpēṣu ca mlēcchā hārītāssakirātakāḥ ॥
From her bellowing came out Kāmbhōjas with the power of the sun.
From her udder came out Paplavas holding deadly weapons.
From her vagina came out Yavanas.
Form the rectum came out Sakas.
From the pores of her skin came out
Mlēcchas, Hāreetas and Kirātas.
1.55.4
தைஸ்தைர்நிஷூதிதம் ஸர்வம் விஸ்வாமித்ரஸ்ய தத்க்ஷணாத் ।
ஸபதாதிகஜம் ஸாஸ்வம் ஸரதம் ரகுநந்தந ॥
taistairniṣūditaṃ sarvaṃ viṡvāmitrasya tatkṣaṇāt ।
sapadātigajaṃ sāṡvaṃ sarathaṃ raghunandana ॥
O prince of Raghu dynasty!
All the four forces of the army of Viṡwāmitra,
the infantry, cavalry, elephantry and the chariotry
were completely destroyed by them.
1.55.5-6
த்ருஷ்ட்வா நிஷூதிதம் ஸைந்யம் வஸிஷ்டேந மஹாத்மநா ।
விஸ்வாமித்ரஸுதாநாம் து ஸதம் நாநாவிதாயுதம் ॥
அப்யதாவத்ஸுஸம்க்ருத்தம் வஸிஷ்டம் ஜபதாம் வரம் ।
ஹுங்காரேணைவ தாந் ஸர்வாந் ததாஹ பகவாந்ருஷி: ॥
dṛṣṭvā niṣūditaṃ sainyaṃ vasiṣṭhēna mahātmanā ।
viṡvāmitrasutānāṃ tu ṡataṃ nānāvidhāyudham ॥
abhyadhāvatsusaṃkruddhaṃ vasiṣṭhaṃ japatāṃ varam ।
huṅkārēṇaiva tān sarvān dadāha bhagavānṛṣiḥ ॥
Seeing the entire army thus destroyed by Mahātma Vasishṭha
a hundred of the sons of Viṡwāmitra became outraged
and dashed to attack him, the foremost of Munis,
with all types of weapons.
All of them were scorched instantaneously
by a snort from Vasishṭha.
1.55.7
தே ஸாஸ்வரதபாதாதா வஸிஷ்டேந மஹாத்மநா ।
பஸ்மீக்ருதா முஹூர்தேந விஸ்வாமித்ரஸுதாஸ்ததா ॥
tē sāṡvarathapādātā vasiṣṭhēna mahātmanā ।
bhasmīkṛtā muhūrtēna viṡvāmitrasutāstadā ॥
All of them were turned into a heap of ashes
along with their chariots and horses
in a matter of moments, by the Mahātma Vasishṭha.
1.55.8
த்ருஷ்ட்வா விநாஸிதாந் புத்ராந் பலம் ச ஸுமஹாயஸா: ।
ஸவ்ரீடஸ்சிந்தயாவிஷ்டோ விஸ்வாமித்ரோऽப்வத்ததா ॥
dṛṣṭvā vināṡitān putrān balaṃ ca sumahāyaṡāḥ ।
savrīḍaṡcintayāviṣṭō viṡvāmitrō'bhvattadā ॥
That renowned Viṡwāmitra,
seeing his sons and army destroyed thus,
felt humiliated and sad.
1.55.9
ஸமுத்ர இவ நிர்வேகோ பக்நதம்ஷ்ட்ர இவோரக: ।
உபரக்த இவாதித்ய: ஸத்யோ நிஷ்ப்ரபதாம் கத: ॥
samudra iva nirvēgō bhagnadaṃṣṭra ivōragaḥ ।
uparakta ivādityaḥ sadyō niṣprabhatāṃ gataḥ ॥
Like an ocean whose fury is spent,
like a snake whose fangs are broken,
and like the sun who is eclipsed,
He became pale and dull.
1.55.10
ஹதபுத்ரபலோ தீநோ லூநபக்ஷ இவ த்விஜ: ।
ஹததர்ப்போ ஹதோத்ஸாஹோ நிர்வேதம் ஸமபத்யத ॥
hataputrabalō dīnō lūnapakṣa iva dvijaḥ ।
hatadarppō hatōtsāhō nirvēdaṃ samapadyata ॥
With his sons and army killed,
with his ego completely shattered,
with his spirits completely subdued,
like a bird whose wings are clipped,
he felt sad, depressed and helpless.
1.55.11
ஸ புத்ரமேகம் ராஜ்யாய பாலயேதி நியுஜ்ய ச ।
ப்ருதிவீம் க்ஷத்ரதர்ம்மேண வநமேவாந்வபத்யத ॥
sa putramēkaṃ rājyāya pālayēti niyujya ca ।
pṛthivīṃ kṣatradharmmēṇa vanamēvānvapadyata ॥
He asked one of his sons to take care of the kingdom
as is expected of a Kshatriya and went away to the Vanas.
1.55.12
ஸ கத்வா ஹிமவத்பார்ஸ்வம் கிந்நரோரகஸேவிதம் ।
மஹாதேவப்ரஸாதார்தம் தபஸ்தேபே மஹாதபா: ॥
sa gatvā himavatpārṡvaṃ kinnarōragasēvitam ।
mahādēvaprasādārthaṃ tapastēpē mahātapāḥ ॥
He went to the mountainsides of the Himalayas
where Kinnaras and Uragas dwell
and started on a great Tapa to please Mahā Dēva.
Mahā Dēva means 'all powerful', Ṡiva.
1.55.13
கேநசித்த்வத காலேந தேவேஸோ வ்ருஷபத்வஜ: ।
தர்ஸயாமாஸ வரதோ விஸ்வாமித்ரம் மஹாபலம் ॥
kēnacittvatha kālēna dēvēṡō vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ ।
darṡayāmāsa varadō viṡvāmitraṃ mahābalam ॥
In due course, the lord of Dēvas (Ṡiva)
with a bull on his pennant,
appeared to the mighty Viṡwāmitra to grant him wishes.
1.55.14
கிமர்தம் தப்யஸே ராஜந் ப்ரூஹி யத்தே விவக்ஷிதம் ।
வரதோऽஸ்மி வரோ யஸ்தே காங்க்ஷித: ஸோऽபிதீயதாம் ॥
kimarthaṃ tapyasē rājan brūhi yattē vivakṣitam ।
varadō'smi varō yastē kāṅkṣitaḥ sō'bhidhīyatām ॥
O King! Why are you performing Tapa? What are you seeking?
Let me know your wish and I shall grant it!
1.55.15
ஏவமுக்தஸ்து தேவேந விஸ்வாமித்ரோ மஹாதபா: ।
ப்ரணிபத்ய மஹாதேவமிதம் வசநமப்ரவீத் ॥
ēvamuktastu dēvēna viṡvāmitrō mahātapāḥ ।
praṇipatya mahādēvamidaṃ vacanamabravīt ॥
Viṡwāmitra who performed great Tapa,
prostrated to Mahā Dēva and said:
1.55.16
யதி துஷ்டோ மஹாதேவ தநுர்வேதோ மமாநக ।
ஸாங்கோபாங்கோபநிஷத: ஸரஹஸ்ய: ப்ரதீயதாம் ॥
yadi tuṣṭō mahādēva dhanurvēdō mamānagha ।
sāṅgōpāṅgōpaniṣadaḥ sarahasyaḥ pradīyatām ॥
O unafflicted one! Pleased if you are,
grant me the Dhanurvēda in its full,
with all its parts and subparts,
and with all its nuances!
Dhanurvēda is the science of Archery that includes the
different types of arrows with both physical and magical powers.
1.55.17
யாநி தேவேஷு சாஸ்த்ராணி தாநவேஷு மஹர்ஷிஷு ।
கந்தர்வயக்ஷரக்ஷஸ்ஸு ப்ரதிபாந்து மமாநக ॥
yāni dēvēṣu cāstrāṇi dānavēṣu maharṣiṣu ।
gandharvayakṣarakṣassu pratibhāntu mamānagha ॥
O unafflicted one! May all Astras
that are with Dēvas, Dānavas, Maharshis, Gandharvas,
Rākshasas and Yakshas be known to me!
1.55.18
தவ ப்ரஸாதாத்பவது தேவதேவ மமேப்ஸிதம் ॥
ஏவமஸ்த்விதி தேவேஸோ வாக்யமுக்த்வா கதஸ்ததா ॥
tava prasādādbhavatu dēvadēva mamēpsitam ॥
ēvamastviti dēvēṡō vākyamuktvā gatastadā ॥
O lord of Dēvas! May my wishes
be fulfilled by your generosity!
"May that be so!" said the lord of Dēvas and left.
1.55.19
ப்ராப்ய சாஸ்த்ராணி ராஜர்ஷிர்விஸ்வாமித்ரோ மஹாபல: ।
தர்பேண மஹதாயுக்தோ தர்பபூர்ணோऽபவத்ததா ॥
prāpya cāstrāṇi rājarṣirviṡvāmitrō mahābalaḥ ।
darpēṇa mahatāyuktō darpapūrṇō'bhavattadā ॥
The mighty strong Rājarshi Viṡwāmitra,
who was already proud, became filled with arrogance
on gaining all the Astras.
1.55.20
விவர்த்தமாநோ வீர்யேண ஸமுத்ர இவ பர்வணி ।
ஹதமேவ ததா மேநே வஸிஷ்டம்ருஷிஸத்தமம் ॥
vivarddhamānō vīryēṇa samudra iva parvaṇi ।
hatamēva tadā mēnē vasiṣṭhamṛṣisattamam ॥
With his spirits and strength risen
like the ocean on the full moon day,
he felt sure of killing Vasishṭha, the foremost of Munis.
1.55.21
ததோ கத்வாஸ்ரமபதம் முமோசாஸ்த்ராணி பார்திவ: ।
யைஸ்தத்தபோவநம் ஸர்வம் நிர்தக்தம் சாஸ்த்ரதேஜஸா ॥
tatō gatvāṡramapadaṃ mumōcāstrāṇi pārthivaḥ ।
yaistattapōvanaṃ sarvaṃ nirdagdhaṃ cāstratējasā ॥
Then that king went to the Āṡrama
and released his weapons and set it on fire.
1.55.22
உதீர்யமாணமஸ்த்ரம் தத்விஸ்வாமித்ரஸ்ய தீமத: ।
த்ருஷ்ட்வா விப்ரத்ருதா பீதா முநய: ஸதஸோ திஸ: ॥
udīryamāṇamastraṃ tadviṡvāmitrasya dhīmataḥ ।
dṛṣṭvā vipradrutā bhītā munayaḥ ṡataṡō diṡaḥ ॥
Seeing those torrent of Astras of
that persistent Viṡwāmitra,
hundreds of Munis fled in every direction.
1.55.23
வஸிஷ்டஸ்ய ச யே ஸிஷ்யாஸ்ததைவ ம்ருகபக்ஷிண: ।
வித்ரவந்தி பயாத்பீதா நாநாதிக்ப்ய: ஸஹஸ்ரஸ: ॥
vasiṣṭhasya ca yē ṡiṣyāstathaiva mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ ।
vidravanti bhayādbhītā nānādigbhyaḥ sahasraṡaḥ ॥
Thousands of Vasishṭha’s Ṡishyas and the
animals and birds of the Āṡrama
fled in every direction with fear.
1.55.24
வஸிஷ்டஸ்யாஸ்ரமபதம் ஸூந்யமாஸீந்மஹாத்மந: ।
முஹூர்தமிவ நி:ஸப்தமாஸீதிரிணஸந்நிபம் ॥
vasiṣṭhasyāṡramapadaṃ ṡūnyamāsīnmahātmanaḥ ।
muhūrtamiva niḥṡabdamāsīdiriṇasannibham ॥
With everyone and everything having fled,
the Āṡrama of that Mahātma Vasishṭha
bore the dreaded emptiness and silence of
a funeral ground for a moment.
1.55.25
வததோ வை வஸிஷ்டஸ்ய மாபைரிதி முஹுர்முஹு: ।
நாஸயாம்யத்ய காதேயம் நீஹாரமிவ பாஸ்கர: ॥
vadatō vai vasiṣṭhasya mābhairiti muhurmuhuḥ ।
nāṡayāmyadya gādhēyaṃ nīhāramiva bhāskaraḥ ॥
Vasishṭha kept telling them all the while:
Do not panic! I will destroy Viṡwāmitra,
just as the sun would destroy fog.
1.55.26
ஏவமுக்த்வா மஹாதேஜா வஸிஷ்டோ ஜபதாம் வர: ।
விஸ்வாமித்ரம் ததா வாக்யம் ஸரோஷமிதமப்ரவீத் ॥
ēvamuktvā mahātējā vasiṣṭhō japatāṃ varaḥ ।
viṡvāmitraṃ tadā vākyaṃ sarōṣamidamabravīt ॥
Then the supremely radiant Vasishṭha, foremost among Munis
turned to Viṡwāmitra and said with rage:
1.55.27
ஆஸ்ரமம் சிரஸம்வ்ருத்தம் யத்விநாஸிதவாநஸி ।
துராசாரோऽஸி தந்மூட தஸ்மாத்த்வம் ந பவிஷ்யஸி ॥
āṡramaṃ cirasaṃvṛddhaṃ yadvināṡitavānasi ।
durācārō'si tanmūḍha tasmāttvaṃ na bhaviṣyasi ॥
You Idiot! You have destroyed the Āṡrama
that has been nurtured and developed over a long time.
You are not going to live any more,
having committed this heinous act.
1.55.28
இத்யுக்த்வா பரமக்ருத்தோ தண்டமுத்யம்ய ஸத்வர: ।
விதூமமிவ காலாக்நிம் யமதண்டமிவாபரம் ॥
ityuktvā paramakruddhō daṇḍamudyamya satvaraḥ ।
vidhūmamiva kālāgniṃ yamadaṇḍamivāparam ॥
Saying thus, he immediately lifted his Daṇḍa with rage,
which looked like the Daṇḍa of Yama and like the smokeless Kālāgni.
The generic meaning of Daṇḍa is 'staff'.
The Daṇḍa held by Ṛshis is in the shape of 'T'.
Kālāgni is a figurative reference to 'time'
that burns away everything in the end.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸ்ரீமத்பாலகாண்டே பஞ்சபஞ்சாஸ: ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ṡrīmadbālakāṇḍē pańcapańcāṡaḥ sargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the fifty fifth Sarga
in Bāla Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
We completed reading 1644 Ṡlōkas out of ~24,000 Ṡlōkas of Vālmeeki Rāmāyaṇa.
