Respected Sri NVS,

Namaskaram,

अपि स्वर्णमयी लङ्का न मे लक्ष्मण रोचते।
जननी जन्मभूमिश्च स्वर्गादपि गरीयसी॥
api svarṇamayī laṅkā na me lakṣmaṇa rocate |
jananī janmabhūmiśca svargādapi garīyasī ||

Even Lanka, decked with all it’s gold doesn't endear itself to me;
Mother and Motherland are greater even than heaven.

This is a well known sloka oft repeated to stress the importance of mother and mother-land. This is supposed to have been uttered by Sri Rama to his brother Lakshmana. But I could not trace this verse in Vamiki Ramayana.

However we find these words in another sloka in different context in "Yuddha Kanda" in Valmiki Ramayana. These words are uttered by Sage Bharadwaja to Sri Rama, when he visits the sage on his return from Sri Lanka after vanquishing Ravana.

मित्राणि धन धान्यानि प्रजानां सम्मतानिव |
जननी जन्म भूमिश्च स्वर्गादपि गरीयसी || ६-१२४-१७
mitraaNi dhana dhaanyaani prajaanaaM sammataaniva |
jananii janma bhuumishcha svargaadapi gariiyasii || 6-124-17

"The friends, the riches and the grains are highly honoured in this world.
Mother and mother-land are far superior to even the heaven."

Under the circumstances,I request your goodself to clarify where from the first sloka is quoted often?

Warm regards,
Brahmanyan,
Bangalore.

Sri:
Dear and Respected Brahmanyan sir,
I also had some search of the origin of this sloka as you mentioned
but later I forgotten this.
Some unauthorized answers I got as "Sri Ramarksha shtothram", "Sri Pandava gita" etc.
But, since 2000 my entire subject of observation is turned towards philosophy and dharma shastra.

Kindly update, if you could find an authorized evidence for the same.

Respected Swamins,
I did a bit of searching..Though this verse is attributed to Valmiki Ramayana, only half of the above verse is found there.
VALMIKI RAMAYANA-YUDDHA KAANDA, BOOK-6, CHAPTER 124,VERSE 17
...janani janmabhumischa...
The first line starting with " Api swarnamayi.. is not thete.Instead there is this line:
mitraaNi dhana dhaanyaaniprajaanaaM sammataaniva
janani janmabhumischa........
" The friends, the riches and the grains are highly honoured in this world.Mother and motherland are far superior to even heaven"
Sometime during these past centuries some one must have altered it for some reason.
By the way, the second line...JANANI JANMABHUMISCHA SWARGAADAPI GARIIYASII"

IS THE NATIONAL MOTTO OF NEPAL!!
