Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 34
In this Sarga, Rāma seeks permission from his father for his departure to Vana along with Seetā and Lakshmaṇa.


Daṡaratha, finding no way out of the predicament, tells Rāma that Rāma should rather take the kingdom from him by force, by placing him under restraint. But Rāma conveys his resolve to go to the Vana. Then, prodded by Kaikēyee once again, the king gives permission to Rāma and wishes him all well in Vana.


And then, he finally asks Rāma to stay at least for the night and leave the morning after. Rāma says that it is not worth enjoying one more night of luxuries as they would not be there from the next day onwards, anyway.


In the presence of every one, he then asserts that he is abjuring of all his claims to the kingdom or any part thereof, and all of it can be conferred on Bharata.
2.34.1 தத: கமலபத்ராக்ஷ: ஸ்யாமோ நிருபமோ மஹாந் ।
உவாச ராம ஸ்தம் ஸூதம் பிதுராக்யாஹி மாமிதி ॥
tataḥ kamalapatrākṣaḥ ṡyāmō nirupamō mahān ।
uvāca rāma staṃ sūtaṃ piturākhyāhi māmiti ॥
Then the magnanimous and peerless Rāma,
of lovely dark complexion and eyes beautiful like lotus petals,
told the charioteer, ‘Tell my father that I have come.’
2.34.2 ஸ ராமப்ரேஷித: க்ஷிப்ரம் ஸந்தாபகலுஷேந்த்ரிய: ।
ப்ரவிஸ்ய ந்ருபதிம் ஸூதோ நிஸ்வஸந்தம் ததர்ஸ ஹ ॥
sa rāmaprēṣitaḥ kṣipraṃ santāpakaluṣēndriyaḥ ।
praviṡya nṛpatiṃ sūtō niṡvasantaṃ dadarṡa ha ॥
Thus prompted by Rāma, the charioteer,
with his senses faltering under grief,
went swiftly and saw the sighing King.
2.34.3 உபரக்தமிவாதித்யம் பஸ்மச்சந்நமிவாநலம் ।
தடாகமிவ நிஸ்தோயமபஸ்யஜ்ஜகதீபதிம் ॥
uparaktamivādityaṃ bhasmacchannamivānalam ।
taṭākamiva nistōyamapaṡyajjagatīpatim ॥
The lords of the world, at that time,
looked like the sun that was eclipsed,
like bright fire covered by ash,
and like a lake bereft of water.
2.34.4 ஆலோக்ய து மஹாப்ராஜ்ஞ: பரமாகுலசேதஸம் ।
ராமமேவாநுஸோசந்தம் ஸூத: ப்ராஞ்ஜலிராஸதத் ॥
ālōkya tu mahāprājñaḥ paramākulacētasam ।
rāmamēvānuṡōcantaṃ sūtaḥ prāñjalirāsadat ॥
Then the wise charioteer, with cupped palms,
approached the king whose mind was highly disturbed
and who was completely preoccupied with thoughts of Rāma.
2.34.5 தம் வர்தயித்வா ராஜாநம் ஸூத: பூர்வம் ஜயாஸிஷா ।
பயவிக்லபயா வாசா மந்தயா ஸ்லக்ஷ்ணமப்ரவீத் ॥
taṃ vardhayitvā rājānaṃ sūtaḥ pūrvaṃ jayāṡiṣā ।
bhayaviklabayā vācā mandayā ṡlakṣṇamabravīt ॥
After greeting the king invoking victory upon him,
the charioteer heSeetāntly and apprehensively
spoke in a soft and gentle voice:
2.34.6 அயம் ஸ புருஷவ்யாக்ரோ த்வாரி திஷ்டதி தே ஸுத: ।
ப்ராஹ்மணேப்யோ தநம் தத்வா ஸர்வஞ்சைவோபஜீவிநாம் ॥
ayaṃ sa puruṣavyāghrō dvāri tiṣṭhati tē sutaḥ ।
brāhmaṇēbhyō dhanaṃ datvā sarvañcaivōpajīvinām ॥
your son, the tiger among men,
having distributed his wealth to Brāhmaṇas and servants,
is waiting at the entrance.
1.34.7 ஸ த்வா பஸ்யது பத்ரம் தே ராமஸ்ஸத்யபராக்ரம: ।
ஸர்வாந் ஸுஹ்ருத ஆப்ருச்ச்ய த்வாமிதாநீம் தித்ருக்ஷதே ॥
sa tvā paṡyatu bhadraṃ tē rāmassatyaparākramaḥ ।
sarvān suhṛda āpṛcchya tvāmidānīṃ didṛkṣatē ॥
May all bode well for you!
May Rāma, of true valor, have your audience now.
He has consulted all his well wishers
and would like to see you.
2.34.8 கமிஷ்யதி மஹாரண்யம் தம் பஸ்ய ஜகதீபதே ।
வ்ருதம் ராஜகுணை ஸ்ஸர்வைராதித்யமிவ ரஸ்மிபி: ॥
gamiṣyati mahāraṇyaṃ taṃ paṡya jagatīpatē ।
vṛtaṃ rājaguṇai ssarvairādityamiva raṡmibhiḥ ॥
He is set to leave for the great forest.
O lord of the worlds! May you behold him,
from whom princely virtues emanate
like rays from the sun!
2.34.9 ஸ ஸத்யவாதீ தர்மாத்மா காம்பீர்யாத்ஸாகரோபம: ।
ஆகாஸ இவ நிஷ்பங்கோ நரேந்த்ர: ப்ரத்யுவாச தம் ॥
sa satyavādī dharmātmā gāmbhīryātsāgarōpamaḥ ।
ākāṡa iva niṣpaṅkō narēndraḥ pratyuvāca tam ॥
That lord of peoples,
the Dharmātma who swore by truth,
who was deep like an ocean and unsoiled like the sky,
responded to him saying:
2.34.10 ஸுமம்ந்த்ராநய மே தாராந் யே கேசிதிஹ மாமகா: ।
தாரை: பரிவ்ருதஸ்ஸர்வைர்த்ரஷ்டுமிச்சாமி தார்மிகம் ॥
sumaṃntrānaya mē dārān yē kēcidiha māmakāḥ ।
dāraiḥ parivṛtassarvairdraṣṭumicchāmi dhārmikam ॥
O Sumantra! Bring every single one of my wives here.
I would like to see the Dhārmika (Rāma)
in the company of all my wives.
2.34.11 ஸோऽந்த:புரமதீத்யைவ ஸ்த்ரியஸ்தா வாக்யமப்ரவீத் ।
ஆர்யாஹ்வயதி வோ ராஜா கம்யதாம் தத்ர மா சிரம் ॥
sō'ntaḥpuramatītyaiva striyastā vākyamabravīt ।
āryāhvayati vō rājā gamyatāṃ tatra mā ciram ॥
And he quickly went to the women’s apartments,
and said to the ladies,
‘O noble ladies, the King calls you.
May you present yourself there without delay.’
2.34.12 ஏவமுக்தா: ஸ்த்ரிய ஸ்ஸர்வா: ஸுமந்த்ரேண ந்ருபாஜ்ஞயா ।
ப்ரசக்ரமு ஸ்தத்பவநம் பர்துராஜ்ஞாய ஸாஸநம் ॥
ēvamuktāḥ striya ssarvāḥ sumantrēṇa nṛpājñayā ।
pracakramu stadbhavanaṃ bharturājñāya ṡāsanam ॥
Hearing the order of the king thus conveyed by Sumantra,
all of those ladies went to the king's palace
in accordance with their husband's summons.
2.34.13 அர்தஸப்தஸதாஸ்தாஸ்து ப்ரமதாஸ்தாம்ரலோசநா: ।
கௌஸல்யாம் பரிவார்யாத ஸநைர்ஜக்முர்த்ருதவ்ரதா: ॥
ardhasaptaṡatāstāstu pramadāstāmralōcanāḥ ।
kausalyāṃ parivāryātha ṡanairjagmurdhṛtavratāḥ ॥
Three hundred and fifty of those copper-eyed
devout women went slowly, following Kousalyā.
2.34.14 ஆகதேஷு ச தாரேஷு ஸமவேக்ஷ்ய மஹீபதி: ।
உவாச ராஜா தம் ஸூதம் ஸுமந்த்ராऽநய மே ஸுதம் ॥
āgatēṣu ca dārēṣu samavēkṣya mahīpatiḥ ।
uvāca rājā taṃ sūtaṃ sumantrā'naya mē sutam ॥
Seeing the arrival of his wives,
the king, the ruler of the land,
then told the charioteer Sumantra to bring Rāma.
2.34.15 ஸ ஸூதோ ராமமாதாய லக்ஷ்மணம் மைதிலீம் ததா ।
ஜகாமாபிமுகஸ்தூர்ணம் ஸகாஸம் ஜகதீபதே: ॥
sa sūtō rāmamādāya lakṣmaṇaṃ maithilīṃ tadā ।
jagāmābhimukhastūrṇaṃ sakāṡaṃ jagatīpatēḥ ॥
The charioteer immediately brought
Rāma, Lakshmaṇa and Seetā
to the presence of the ruler of the world.
2.34.16 ஸ ராஜா புத்ரமாயாந்தம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா தூராத்க்ருதாஞ்ஜலிம் ।
உத்பபாதாஸநாத்தூர்ணமார்த ஸ்த்ரீஜநஸம்வ்ருத: ॥
sa rājā putramāyāntaṃ dṛṣṭvā dūrātkṛtāñjalim ।
utpapātāsanāttūrṇamārta strījanasaṃvṛtaḥ ॥
The king, surrounded by the women,
rose from his seat with grief
when he saw his son from a distance,
approaching him with joined palms.
2.34.17 ஸோऽபிதுத்ராவ வேகேந ராமம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா விஸாம்பதி: ।
தமஸம்ப்ராப்ய து:கார்த: பபாத புவி மூர்சித: ॥
sō'bhidudrāva vēgēna rāmaṃ dṛṣṭvā viṡāmpatiḥ ।
tamasaṃprāpya duḥkhārtaḥ papāta bhuvi mūrchitaḥ ॥
Seeing Rāma, the ruler of the people
sprang toward him eagerly,
only to fall down in a faint, overwhelmed with grief.
2.34.18 தம் ராமோऽப்யபதத் க்ஷிப்ரம் லக்ஷ்மணஸ்ச மஹாரத: ।
விஸம்ஜ்ஞமிவ து:கேந ஸஸோகம் ந்ருபதிம் ததா ॥
taṃ rāmō'bhyapatat kṣipraṃ lakṣmaṇaṡca mahārathaḥ ।
visaṃjñamiva duḥkhēna saṡōkaṃ nṛpatiṃ tadā ॥
Rāma and the mighty warrior Lakshmaṇa
dashed immediately to the king
who lay senseless, crying in grief!
2.34.19 ஸ்த்ரீஸஹஸ்ரநிநாதஸ்ச ஸம்ஜஜ்ஞே ராஜவேஸ்மநி ।
ஹா ஹா ராமேதி ஸஹஸா பூஷணத்வநிமூர்சித: ॥
strīsahasraninādaṡca saṃjajñē rājavēṡmani ।
hā hā rāmēti sahasā bhūṣaṇadhvanimūrchitaḥ ॥
Thereupon rose a great din,
a thousand women crying, ‘ Alas, Rāma, alas!’
mingled with the noise of their jingling ornaments.
2.34.20 தம் பரிஷ்வஜ்ய பாஹுப்யாம் தாவுபௌ ராமலக்ஷ்மணௌ ।
பர்யம்ங்கே ஸீதயா ஸார்தம் ருதந்த: ஸமவேஸயந் ॥
taṃ pariṣvajya bāhubhyāṃ tāvubhau rāmalakṣmaṇau ।
paryaṃṅkē sītayā sārdhaṃ rudantaḥ samavēṡayan ॥
Rāma and Lakshmaṇa, crying,
gathered him in their arms
and placed him on the couch,
assisted by Seetā.
2.34.21 அத ராமோ முஹூர்தேந லப்தஸம்ஜ்ஞம் மஹீபதிம் ।
உவாச ப்ராஞ்ஜலிர்பூத்வா ஸோகார்ணவபரிப்லுதம் ॥
atha rāmō muhūrtēna labdhasaṃjñaṃ mahīpatim ।
uvāca prāñjalirbhūtvā ṡōkārṇavapariplutam ॥
Then Rāma, with joined palms, said to the king
who regained his senses after a while
and was drowned in an ocean of grief:
2.34.22 ஆப்ருச்சே த்வாம் மஹாராஜ ஸர்வேஷாமீஸ்வரோऽஸி ந: ।
ப்ரஸ்திதம் தண்டகாரண்யம் பஸ்ய த்வம் குஸலேந மாம் ॥
āpṛcchē tvāṃ mahārāja sarvēṣāmīṡvarō'si naḥ ।
prasthitaṃ daṇḍakāraṇyaṃ paṡya tvaṃ kuṡalēna mām ॥
O great king! You are the lord of us all!
I seek your permission!
May your graceful glances
shower on me as I head to Daṇḍaka Vana !
2.34.23 லக்ஷ்மணம் சாநுஜாநீஹி ஸீதா சாந்வேதி மாம் வநம் ।
காரணைர்பஹுபி ஸ்தத்யைர்வார்யமாணௌ ந சேச்சத: ॥
lakṣmaṇaṃ cānujānīhi sītā cānvēti māṃ vanam ।
kāraṇairbahubhi stathyairvāryamāṇau na cēcchataḥ ॥
Please give permission to Lakshmaṇa also.
Seetā is also following me to Vana.
For many a cogent reason,
they could not be dissuaded.
2.34.24 அநுஜாநீஹி ஸர்வாந்ந: ஸோகமுத்ஸ்ருஜ்ய மாநத ।
லக்ஷ்மணம் மாம் ச ஸீதாம் ச ப்ரஜாபதிரிவ ப்ரஜா: ॥
anujānīhi sarvānnaḥ ṡōkamutsṛjya mānada ।
lakṣmaṇaṃ māṃ ca sītāṃ ca prajāpatiriva prajāḥ ॥
Grant your permission to Lakshmaṇa, Seetā and all of us,
like Brahma to all the people.
May you overcome your grief,
O upholder of the self respect of all!
2.34.25 ப்ரதீக்ஷமாணமவ்யக்ரமநுஜ்ஞாம் ஜகதீபதே: ।
உவாச ராஜா ஸம்ப்ரேக்ஷ்ய வநவாஸாய ராகவம் ॥
pratīkṣamāṇamavyagramanujñāṃ jagatīpatēḥ ।
uvāca rājā samprēkṣya vanavāsāya rāghavam ॥
Seeing that Rāghava,
who thus sought permission
from the lord of lands in all honesty
regarding his departure to Vana, the king said:
2.34.26 அஹம் ராகவ! கைகேய்யா வரதாநேந மோஹித: ।
அயோத்யாயாஸ்த்வமேவாத்ய பவ ராஜா நிக்ருஹ்ய மாம் ॥
ahaṃ rāghava! kaikēyyā varadānēna mōhitaḥ ।
ayōdhyāyāstvamēvādya bhava rājā nigṛhya mām ॥
I have been taken advantage of by Kaikēyee,
O Rāghava, through the boon I granted her.
Place me under restraint and
make yourself the King of Ayōdhyā right away!
2.34.27 ஏவமுக்தோ ந்ருபதிநா ராமோ தர்மப்ருதாம் வர: ।
ப்ரத்யுவாசாஞ்ஜலிம் க்ருத்வா பிதரம் வாக்யகோவித: ॥
ēvamuktō nṛpatinā rāmō dharmabhṛtāṃ varaḥ ।
pratyuvācāñjaliṃ kṛtvā pitaraṃ vākyakōvidaḥ ॥
Told thus by the king,
The eloquent Rāma, the foremost among the keepers of Dharma
responded to his father, with joined palms:
2.34.28 பவாந்வர்ஷ ஸஹஸ்ராய ப்ருதிவ்யா ந்ருபதே! பதி: ।
அஹம் த்வரண்யேவத்ஸ்யாமி ந மே கார்யம் த்வயாऽந்ருதம் ॥
bhavānvarṣa sahasrāya pṛthivyā nṛpatē! patiḥ ।
ahaṃ tvaraṇyēvatsyāmi na mē kāryaṃ tvayā'nṛtam ॥
May you be the ruler of the lands,
for thousands of years, O lord of the peoples!
As for me, forest is the place to dwell.
May you not dishonor your word for my sake!
2.34.29 நவ பஞ்ச ச வர்ஷாணி வநவாஸே விஹ்ருத்ய தே ।
புந:பாதௌ க்ரஹீஷ்யாமி ப்ரதிஜ்ஞாந்தே நராதிப! ॥
nava pañca ca varṣāṇi vanavāsē vihṛtya tē ।
punaḥpādau grahīṣyāmi pratijñāntē narādhipa! ॥
I shall spend nine and five years dwelling in the Vana,
and then, after fulfilling the pledge,
O lord of the people, I shall return to lie at your feet.
2.34.30 ருதந்நார்த: ப்ரியம் புத்ரம் ஸத்யபாஸேந ஸம்யத: ।
கைகேய்யா சோத்யமாநஸ்து மிதோ ராஜா தமப்ரவீத் ॥
rudannārtaḥ priyaṃ putraṃ satyapāṡēna saṃyataḥ ।
kaikēyyā cōdyamānastu mithō rājā tamabravīt ॥
Crying pitifully, bound by honor to his word,
and prodded by Kaikēyee in covert gestures,
the king said to his beloved son:
2.34.31 ஸ்ரேயஸே வ்ருத்தயே தாத! புநராகமநாய ச ।
கச்சஸ்வாரிஷ்டமவ்யக்ர: பந்தாநமகுதோபயம் ॥
ṡrēyasē vṛddhayē tāta! punarāgamanāya ca ।
gacchasvāriṣṭamavyagraḥ panthānamakutōbhayam ॥
Go, my child! May your path be free of
all dangers, troubles and threats!
May you return to enjoy prosperity and abundance!
2.34.32 ந ஹி ஸத்யாத்மநஸ்தாத! தர்மாபிமநஸ ஸ்தவ ।
விநிவர்தயிதும் புத்தி: ஸக்யதே ரகுநந்தந ॥
na hi satyātmanastāta! dharmābhimanasa stava ।
vinivartayituṃ buddhiḥ ṡakyatē raghunandana ॥
My dear child!
You hold truth in your heart and
your mind is focused on Dharma!
And your decision, O delight of Raghu dynasty,
seems next to impossible to change!
2.34.33 அத்ய த்விதாநீம் ரஜநீம் புத்ர! மா கச்ச ஸர்வதா ।
ஏகாஹதர்ஸநேநாபி ஸாது தாவச்சராம்யஹம் ॥
adya tvidānīṃ rajanīṃ putra! mā gaccha sarvathā ।
ēkāhadarṡanēnāpi sādhu tāvaccarāmyaham ॥
But by no means, shall you leave right away,
at this hour of the night!
I shall feel better at least by that much,
by seeing you here for one more day!
2.34.34 மாதரம் மாம் ச ஸம்பஸ்யந் வஸேமாமத்ய ஸர்வரீம்! ।
தர்பித ஸ்ஸர்வகாமைஸ்த்வம் ஸ்வ: காலே ஸாதயிஷ்யஸி ॥
mātaraṃ māṃ ca sampaṡyan vasēmāmadya ṡarvarīm! ।
tarpita ssarvakāmaistvaṃ ṡvaḥ kālē sādhayiṣyasi ॥
Stay here tonight with me and your mother,
and let me entertain you with all that you like.
You can leave in the morning.
2.34.35 துஷ்கரம் க்ரியதே புத்ர ஸர்வதா ராகவ! த்வயா ।
மத்ப்ரியார்தம் ப்ரியாம்ஸ்த்யக்த்வா யத்யாஸி விஜநம் வநம் ॥
duṣkaraṃ kriyatē putra sarvathā rāghava! tvayā ।
matpriyārthaṃ priyāṃstyaktvā yadyāsi vijanaṃ vanam ॥
My son! O Rāghava!
What you are doing is by no means easy;
going to the uninhabited Vana,
leaving everyone you love,
just to please me!
2.34.36 ந சைதந்மே ப்ரியம் புத்ர ஸபே ஸத்யேந ராகவ ।
சந்நயா சலிதஸ்த்வஸ்மி ஸ்த்ரியா சந்நாக்நிகல்பயா ॥
na caitanmē priyaṃ putra ṡapē satyēna rāghava ।
channayā chalitastvasmi striyā channāgnikalpayā ॥
My son! None of this is to my liking at all!
O Rāghava! I swear by all that is true!
I was hoodwinked by the secret agenda of a woman,
who was like a concealed fire.
.2.34.37 வஞ்சநா யா து லப்தா மே தாம் த்வம் நிஸ்தர்துமிச்சஸி ।
அநயா வ்ருத்தஸாதிந்யா கைகேய்யாऽபிப்ரசோதித: ॥
vañcanā yā tu labdhā mē tāṃ tvaṃ nistartumicchasi ।
anayā vṛttasādinyā kaikēyyā'bhipracōditaḥ ॥
And, you want to save me from this disgrace,
urged by Kaikēyee who is simply
exploiting the good nature of people!
2.34.38 ந சைததாஸ்சர்யதமம் யத்தஜ்யேஷ்டஸ்ஸுதோ மம ।
அபாந்ருதகதம் புத்ர! பிதரம் கர்துமிச்சஸி ॥
na caitadāṡcaryatamaṃ yattajyēṣṭhassutō mama ।
apānṛtakathaṃ putra! pitaraṃ kartumicchasi ॥
My son! It is no big surprise
that you, the eldest of my sons,
like to make your father’s word
not become untrue!
2.34.39 அத ராமஸ்ததா ஸ்ருத்வா பிதுரார்தஸ்ய பாஷிதம் ।
லக்ஷ்மணேந ஸஹ ப்ராத்ரா தீநோ வசநமப்ரவீத் ॥
atha rāmastathā ṡrutvā piturārtasya bhāṣitam ।
lakṣmaṇēna saha bhrātrā dīnō vacanamabravīt ॥
Listening to such grief stricken words of his father,
Rāma, along with brother Lakshmaṇa,
spoke these heart-rending words:
2.34.40 ப்ராப்ஸ்யாமி யாநத்ய குணாந்கோ மே ஸ்வஸ்தாந் ப்ரதாஸ்யதி ।
அபக்ரமணமேவாத: ஸர்வகாமைரஹம் வ்ருணே ॥
prāpsyāmi yānadya guṇānkō mē ṡvastān pradāsyati ।
apakramaṇamēvātaḥ sarvakāmairahaṃ vṛṇē ॥
I may get everything that I want for one more day.
But who is going to give them to me from tomorrow onwards?
Hence I would seek, of all, only my departure.
2.34.41 இயம் ஸராஷ்ட்ரா ஸஜநா தநதாந்யஸமாகுலா ।
மயா விஸ்ருஷ்டா வஸுதா பரதாய ப்ரதீயதாம் ॥
iyaṃ sarāṣṭrā sajanā dhanadhānyasamākulā ।
mayā visṛṣṭā vasudhā bharatāya pradīyatām ॥
Let this land that I completely relinquish
with all its provinces and peoples,
replete with wealth and grains,
be bestowed on Bharata.
2.34.42-43a வநவாஸக்ருதா புத்திர்ந ச மேऽத்ய சலிஷ்யதி ।
யஸ்துஷ்டேந வரோ தத்த: கைகேய்யை வரத! த்வயா ।
தீயதாம் நிகிலேநைவ ஸத்யஸ்த்வம் பவ பார்திவ ॥
vanavāsakṛtā buddhirna ca mē'dya caliṣyati ।
yastuṣṭēna varō dattaḥ kaikēyyai varada! tvayā ।
dīyatāṃ nikhilēnaiva satyastvaṃ bhava pārthiva ॥
My decision to go to the Vana cannot be shaken now.
O giver of largesse! May the boon that was given to
Kaikēyee out of gratification be fulfilled in full!
O King, may you be counted on for keeping your word! Recall that Daṡaratha gave the boons to Kaikēyee in full gratitude when she saved his life in the war fought by Dēvas and Asuras.
2.34.43b-44a அஹம் நிதேஸம் பவதோ யதோக்தமநுபாலயந் ।
சதுர்தஸ ஸமா வத்ஸ்யே வநே வநசரைஸ்ஸஹ ॥
ahaṃ nidēṡaṃ bhavatō yathōktamanupālayan ।
caturdaṡa samā vatsyē vanē vanacaraissaha ॥
I shall follow your order to the hilt
and live for fourteen years in the Vana
in the company of the other dwellers of the Vana.
2.34.44b-45 மா விமர்ஸோ வஸுமதீ பரதாய ப்ரதீயதாம் ।
ந ஹி மே காங்க்ஷிதம் ராஜ்யம் ஸுகமாத்மநி வா ப்ரியம் ।
யதாநிதேஸம் கர்தும் வை தவைவ ரகுநந்தந ॥
mā vimarṡō vasumatī bharatāya pradīyatām ।
na hi mē kāṅkṣitaṃ rājyaṃ sukhamātmani vā priyam ।
yathānidēṡaṃ kartuṃ vai tavaiva raghunandana ॥
No further deliberations are needed.
Let the country be given to Bharata.
I wish to enjoy neither the kingdom nor the comforts.
O delight of Raghu dynasty,
I would just like to comply with your word.
2.34.46 அபகச்சது தே து:கம் மாபூர்பாஷ்பபரிப்லுத: ।
ந ஹி க்ஷுப்யதி துர்தர்ஷ: ஸமுத்ர: ஸரிதாம் பதி: ॥
apagacchatu tē duḥkhaṃ mābhūrbāṣpapariplutaḥ ।
na hi kṣubhyati durdharṣaḥ samudraḥ saritāṃ patiḥ ॥
May you be relieved of this grief!
May you not shed tears!
The lord of rivers, the inviolable ocean,
never allows himself to be overborne.
2.34.47 நைவாஹம் ராஜ்யமிச்சாமி ந ஸுகம் ந ச மேதிநீம் ।
நைவ ஸர்வாநிமாந் காமாந்ந ஸ்வர்கம் நைவ ஜீவிதம் ॥
naivāhaṃ rājyamicchāmi na sukhaṃ na ca mēdinīm ।
naiva sarvānimān kāmānna svargaṃ naiva jīvitam ॥
I seek neither the kingdom, nor comforts,
nor the princess of Mithilā.
Nor any of these luxuries, nor heaven, nor life.
2.34.48 த்வாமஹம் ஸத்யமிச்சாமி நாந்ருதம் புருஷர்ஷப ।
ப்ரத்யக்ஷம் தவ ஸத்யேந ஸுக்ருதேந ச தே ஸபே ॥
tvāmahaṃ satyamicchāmi nānṛtaṃ puruṣarṣabha ।
pratyakṣaṃ tava satyēna sukṛtēna ca tē ṡapē ॥
Rather, O Bull among men, I would like to see you
as a man of your word, not otherwise.
I swear in your presence,
on everything that is true
and every good deed of life.
2.34.49 ந ச ஸக்யம் மயா தாத! ஸ்தாதும் க்ஷணமபி ப்ரபோ ।
ஸ ஸோகம் தாரய ஸ்வேமம் ந ஹி மேऽஸ்தி விபர்யய: ॥
na ca ṡakyaṃ mayā tāta! sthātuṃ kṣaṇamapi prabhō ।
sa ṡōkaṃ dhāraya svēmaṃ na hi mē'sti viparyayaḥ ॥
I cannot stay here a moment longer, father;
do not make yourself miserable on this account.
There is no going back for me.
2.34.50 அர்திதோ ஹ்யஸ்மி கைகேய்யா வநம் கச்சேதி ராகவ ।
மயா சோக்தம் வ்ரஜாமீதி தத்ஸத்யமநுபாலயே ॥
arthitō hyasmi kaikēyyā vanaṃ gacchēti rāghava ।
mayā cōktaṃ vrajāmīti tatsatyamanupālayē ॥
O Rāghava! I have been asked
by Kaikēyee to go to the Vana,
and I have said I would,
and I shall keep my word.
2.34.51 மா சோத்கண்டாம் க்ருதா தேவ! வநே ரம்ஸ்யாமஹே வயம் ।
ப்ரஸாந்தஹரிணாகீர்ணே நாநாஸகுநிநாதிதே ॥
mā cōtkaṇṭhāṃ kṛthā dēva! vanē raṃsyāmahē vayam ।
praṡāntahariṇākīrṇē nānāṡakunināditē ॥
You must not entertain any anxiety
on my account, my lord!
We shall enjoy in the Vana where
gentle deer abound and
the air is filled with the songs of birds. In Sarga 28, Rāma says to Seetā that Vana is a terrible place to live. But here, he says, it is a wonderful place to live. Why the contradiction?


This is the contradiction of life itself. It could look terrible or delightful, based on your vantage point.


When everything goes well, the world looks beautiful. When things go wrong the world looks terrible.


When one is concerned about the delicate Seetā, Vana looks like a dreaded place. When one is resolute to go and live there, it rather appears to be a beautiful place.
2.34.52 பிதா ஹி தைவதம் தாத! தேவதாநாமபி ஸ்ம்ருதம் ।
தஸ்மாத்தைவதமித்யேவ கரிஷ்யாமி பிதுர்வச: ॥
pitā hi daivataṃ tāta! dēvatānāmapi smṛtam ।
tasmāddaivatamityēva kariṣyāmi piturvacaḥ ॥
Scriptures say that even Dēvas
regard father as a deity.
Hence I shall do my father’s will,
looking upon it as the command of my deity.
2.34.53 சதுர்தஸஸு வர்ஷேஷு கதேஷு நரஸத்தம ।
புநர்த்ரக்ஷ்யஸி மாம் ப்ராப்தம் ஸந்தாபோऽயம் விமுச்யதாம் ॥
caturdaṡasu varṣēṣu gatēṣu narasattama ।
punardrakṣyasi māṃ prāptaṃ santāpō'yaṃ vimucyatām ॥
O best among men! After four and ten years,
you will certainly see me return.
Hence, please be relieved of this worry!
2.34.54 யேந ஸம்ஸ்தம்பநீயோऽயம் ஸர்வோ பாஷ்பகலோ ஜந: ।
ஸ த்வம் புருஷஸார்தூல! கிமர்தம் விக்ரியாம் கத: ॥
yēna saṃstambhanīyō'yaṃ sarvō bāṣpagalō janaḥ ।
sa tvaṃ puruṣaṡārdūla! kimarthaṃ vikriyāṃ gataḥ ॥
O tiger among men!
You should be the one to console
all these people whose voices are wet and choking.
It does not behoove you to become dejected like this.
2.34.55 புரம் ச ராஷ்ட்ரம் ச மஹீ ச கேவலா
மயா நிஸ்ருஷ்டா பரதாய தீயதாம் ।
அஹம் நிதேஸம் பவதோऽநுபாலயந்
வநம் கமிஷ்யாமி சிராய ஸேவிதும் ॥
puraṃ ca rāṣṭraṃ ca mahī ca kēvalā
mayā nisṛṣṭā bharatāya dīyatām ।
ahaṃ nidēṡaṃ bhavatō'nupālayan
vanaṃ gamiṣyāmi cirāya sēvitum ॥
May this city, kingdom and this entire earth,
abjured by me, be conferred on Bharata.
In following your order, I shall
leave to the Vana, to dwell for a long time. This is the first time Rāma is giving a sort of public speech, after coming to know about the two boons by Kaikēyee.


He is asserting himself, in no uncertain terms, that he has decided to leave for the Vana, making no claim whatsoever to anything that is part of the kingdom, thus bringing a final closure to the entire issue.


The oath, in its solemnity, is similar to the oath taken by Bheeshma in the epic Mahābhārata when he abjured his claim to his father’s kingdom and any part thereof.




2.34.56 மயா நிஸ்ருஷ்டாம் பரதோ மஹீமிமாம்
ஸஸைலஷண்டாம் ஸபுராம் ஸகாநநாம் ।
ஸிவாம் ஸுஸீமாமநுஸாஸ்து கேவலம்
த்வயா யதுக்தம் ந்ருபதே ததாஸ்து தத் ॥
mayā nisṛṣṭāṃ bharatō mahīmimāṃ
saṡailaṣaṇḍāṃ sapurāṃ sakānanām ।
ṡivāṃ susīmāmanuṡāstu kēvalaṃ
tvayā yaduktaṃ nṛpatē tathāstu tat ॥
Fully abjured by me, let this land,
with its mountain ranges, cities and forests and
well defined boundaries, be ruled by Bharata.
May everything be done according to your word!
2.34.57 ந மே ததா பார்திவ தீயதே மநோ
மஹத்ஸு காமேஷு ந சாத்மந:ப்ரியே ।
யதா நிதேஸே தவ ஸிஷ்டஸம்மதே
வ்யபைது து:கம் தவ மத்க்ருதேऽநக ॥
na mē tathā pārthiva dhīyatē manō
mahatsu kāmēṣu na cātmanaḥpriyē ।
yathā nidēṡē tava ṡiṣṭasammatē
vyapaitu duḥkhaṃ tava matkṛtē'nagha ॥
O faultless one! My mind is not as much set on
Comforts, luxuries and on personal indulgences
as it is set on obeying your command,
which is acceptable to the noblest of men.
May you not grieve on account of me.
2.34.58 ததத்ய நைவாநக ராஜ்யமவ்யயம்
ந ஸர்வகாமாந்ந ஸுகம் ந மைதிலீம் ।
ந ஜீவிதம் த்வாமந்ருதேந யோஜயந்
வ்ருணீய ஸத்யம் வ்ரதமஸ்து தே ததா ॥
tadadya naivānagha rājyamavyayaṃ
na sarvakāmānna sukhaṃ na maithilīm ।
na jīvitaṃ tvāmanṛtēna yōjayan
vṛṇīya satyaṃ vratamastu tē tathā ॥
Hence, O faultless one,
I would not seek anything,
be it the imperishable kingdom,
or all the desirable luxuries and comforts,
or the princess of Mithilā, or life itself,
that would lend you to be untruthful.
May your commitment to your word
prove to be absolutely truthful!
2.34.59 பலாநி மூலாநி ச பக்ஷயந்வநே
கிரீம்ஸ்ச பஸ்யந் ஸரிதஸ்ஸராம்ஸி ச ।
வநம் ப்ரவிஸ்யைவ விசித்ரபாதபம்
ஸுகீ பவிஷ்யாமி தவாஸ்து நிர்வ்ருதி: ॥
phalāni mūlāni ca bhakṣayanvanē
girīṃṡca paṡyan saritassarāṃsi ca ।
vanaṃ praviṡyaiva vicitrapādapam
sukhī bhaviṣyāmi tavāstu nirvṛtiḥ ॥
Entering the forest that
is full of wonderful trees,
I shall live there happily
Enjoying the roots and fruits,
and the sight of the many mountains, lakes and rivers;
so may you set your mind at rest.
2.34.60 ஏவம் ஸ ராஜா வ்யஸநாபிபந்ந:
ஸோகேந து:கேந ச தாம்யமாந: ।
ஆலிங்க்ய புத்ரம் ஸுவிநஷ்டஸம்ஜ்ஞோ
மோஹம் கதோ நைவ சிசேஷ்ட கிம்ஞ்சித் ॥
ēvaṃ sa rājā vyasanābhipannaḥ
ṡōkēna duḥkhēna ca tāmyamānaḥ ।
āliṅgya putraṃ suvinaṣṭasaṃjñō
mōhaṃ gatō naiva cicēṣṭa kiṃñcit ॥
The King, overwhelmed by the disaster,
with his body and mind tormented by grief,
fell into a dead faint and
lay motionless as he embraced his son.
2.34.61 தேவ்யஸ்தத ஸ்ஸம்ருருதுஸ்ஸமேதா
ஸ்தாம் வர்ஜயித்வா நரதேவபத்நீம் ।
ருதந் ஸுமந்த்ரோऽऽபி ஜகாம மூர்சாம்
ஹாஹாக்ருதம் தத்ர பபூவ ஸர்வம் ॥
dēvyastata ssaṃrurudussamētā
stāṃ varjayitvā naradēvapatnīm ।
rudan sumantrō''pi jagāma mūrchāṃ
hāhākṛtaṃ tatra babhūva sarvam ॥
And all the wives of the lord of peoples
wept aloud, save that one wife alone.
Sumantra also cried and fainted.
The place was filled with cries everywhere.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அயோத்யாகாண்டே சதுஸ்த்ரிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ayōdhyākāṇḍē catustriṃṡassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the thirty fourth Sarga
in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
